When Should I get Acupuncture in an IVF cycle?

by Parvati
(UK)

Hi Amelia,
When is it best to have acupuncture in an IVF cycle? Should I have it before egg collection, that day or the day before? Also before the egg transfer, when is ideal time?

How many treatments would you recommend after egg transfer and at what timescales?

Many Thanks,
Parvati xx

Acupuncture in an IVF cycle
by: Amelia Hirota

Hi Parvati,
The real key with acupuncture in an IVF cycle is regularity and preparation. In an ideal cycle, you would prepare you body for 3-6 months with a holistic TCM plan including acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietary therapy and lifestyle changes.

IVF offers a 20-30% chance of pregnancy and with a solid preconception plan, as I described above, I find that success goes up significantly. In the clinic I find that most of the couples that prepare for an IVF cycle for 3-6 months are pregnant on their first IVF cycle.

If you're already into a cycle and would like to add acupuncture to the mix, studies show that acupuncture helps increase success rates from
10 - 22%. These acupuncture treatments usually occur just prior to egg retrieval (ideally for both the man and the woman), just before embryo transfer and immediately after embryo transfer.

After embryo transfer, I like to schedule a treatment once a week. If there is a positive pregnancy, then I continue with the once a week schedule through the first trimester to support the body and hormonal balance.

I would like to emphasize that acupuncture always works best when dietary therapy is advised and lifestyle changes are implemented. Good luck to you!

Amelia

Hi Amelia, I have also been diagnosed with low ovarian reserve with an AMH test. My question is since I can't conceive naturally, whether or not acupuncture will help in my situation? Will it help with a better response to medications thereby producing more eggs with potentially good egg quality to have a healthy child? What do you think of acupuncture and low ovarian reserve? Thank you for your assistance, Shelley

In my opinion acupuncture is better than Boston IVF. I started seeing Amelia Hirota at the Center of Balance after I had gone through 6 IVF cycles with 3 transfers. My last cycle ended with a miscarriage at 6 weeks. Learn why Samantha feels that acupuncture worked better than Boston IVF for her.

Dear Amelia, My name is Heather and I've been seeing an acupuncturist that I really like here in San Diego. I recently completed a comprehensive female hormone panel saliva test and it showed that I have high testosterone levels. I was told that I have too much sugar in my diet with possible PCOS. What do you think about high testosterone levels and PCOS?

Dear Amelia, I have uterine fibroids and I had a myomectomy when I was 27. My goal in to get pregnant and shrink the fibroids without undergoing another surgery. Please let me know what you think my coarse of action should be. Learn the answer to Oneka's question, "can acupuncture shrink uterine fibroids?" and ask your own questions too.
