Weight Gain and Pregnancy

Hi Amelia,
I am writing to let you know that I LOVE your website. I wish that you were in Miami, FL to treat me. I currently see a holistic doctor and am considering going to a holistic school for a nutrition degree.

Here's my story. In 2006 I got pregnant and lost the baby in week 9. After that, once I began getting my period again (in Jan 2007), I gained 5 pounds every month and can't lose any of it. I am now at 232.8 pounds. I was at 194 when I lost the pregnancy.

I have gained 38 pounds and my adrenal hormone is out of control and out of balance. I am B-12 deficient. I want to balance every out so badly and lose the weight, so that I can finally get pregnant and start my family. However, I am afraid to get pregnant at this weight and I continue to gain weight.

I am a gastric bypass patient from 2002 and refuse to get to 327 pounds again! If you have any colleagues in Miami,FL who have the same belief system as you and spirit as you, please forward their number to me. I feel that the person's passion and spirit help a lot in the healing process.

Thank you in advance for taking time out of your day to read this.

Sincerely,
Normi

Weight Gain and Pregnancy

Hi Normi,
Thank you for your kind words about my website. I wish that I could treat you too. I feel a lot of compassion for your situation, but feel optimistic that you will find the solution which suits you. You're probably on the right track with nutrition.

I'm so sorry to hear about your miscarriage. It's very important to really care for your body after a miscarriage. In Chinese medicine we view a miscarriage similarly to a pregnancy in the degree to which it depletes your qi or energy. I realize that it has been a few years, but it seems that the pregnancy and the resulting miscarriage somehow threw your body out of balance (as you obviously know.)
I commend your conviction to put off getting pregnant until you get your body in balance and lose the weight. Being overweight is puts you at risk of a miscarriage and your state of health at the time of conception determines many of the major markers for heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. Preconception care is the key to having a sound pregnancy and a healthy baby.

I wish that I knew of a fertility acupuncturist in Miami, FL, but I don't. If you can't get a personal referral, I think that it's a good idea to Google "acupuncture" "miami" "infertility." Then read about these acupuncturists and speak with them on the phone to see if you're a good match. I have many patients speak with me on the phone after finding me online and if they're comfortable with my approach, they will book an appointment.

I recommend that you check out the book, Women, Hormones and the Menstrual Cycle by Ruth Trickey. It's a wonderful read all about our bodies, how they work and how we can balance them holistically.

Sending healthy vibes your way,
Amelia Hirota
