Sperm Morphology

Dear Amelia,
I have been trying to conceive for nearly 2 years and I am now 34 years old. I have had all my tests, in which my Dr. says, everything is fine.

However, I have been told I have polycystic ovaries. But, my doctor was quite dismissive of this and said it was genetic / hereditary and nothing to worry about. I have regular periods and am ovulating.

My husband had 2 semen tests which were all fine, except the morphology read 9 on the first test and 8 on the next test. Do you think this is something to worry about?

I have started acupuncture 4 weeks ago and am taking Chinese herbs too.

Basically, are all my efforts to conceive naturally worth it, if there is a potential morphology issue? Or am I better off having IVF?

It's really getting me down and am not sure what to do? Many thanks!

Hi Moon,
I appreciate your questions about sperm morphology. Your husband's morphology is borderline at 8 to 9% morphology, but it's not necessarily detrimental. A good count, volume and motility could help the borderline sperm morphology.

Please respond in the comments section and let me know your husband's sperm count/ml, motility, forward progression and volume in ml.

I'm very glad to hear that you are ovulating and that your cycle is regular. That's great, especially since you have polycystic ovaries. Do you know why you were diagnosed with PCOS by the other doctor? Did your ovaries show up with cysts on an ultrasound?

Before moving on to IVF, I think that it's important to exhaust your natural options. I think it's wonderful that you've started taking Chinese herbs and are getting acupuncture. It would be helpful if your husband could join you in preparing his body for making a baby, as well.

My name is Nicole and I started working with Amelia after not getting my period for several months after going off birth control pills. I had been on and off birth control pills for 10 years and was ready to start trying for a baby.
