Finding a Fertility Acupuncturist

by Joann
(Setauket, NY)

Hi Amelia,
I need you advice in finding a fertility acupuncturist. Should an acupuncturist check your pulse at the time of each visit?

How do you know if he/she is doing what is needed? I am interested in acupuncuture and herbs for unexplained infertility.

Other than word of mouth, how do I find a qualified fertility acupuncturist?

Thanks for allowing me to ask these important questions and God bless you for this web site!

Blessings,
Joann

Finding a Fertility Acupuncturist
by: Amelia Hirota

Hi Joann,
Finding a good fertility acupuncturist can be tricky. There really is no fool proof method. However, I'll give you a few guidelines to help you.

Also, you may want to take my Fertility Acupunture Teleclass called, "If Only the Needles Could Talk" to help you understand how acupuncture enhances fertility, so that you can better choose an appropriate acupuncturist.

Your acupuncturist may or may not check your pulse at every visit. It depends on how important pulse taking is to her diagnostic method. In my case, sometimes I am very interested in the pulse and at other times I don't even take it. For me it's case by case.

I've heard from some of my readers that their acupuncturist never advises them on diet. An acupuncturist that isn't talking about diet isn't really doing a good job. If they are too busy to talk about diet, they are too busy and need to make adjustments. Diet is the foundation of traditional Chinese medicine and treating a patient without paying attention to their diet is a waste of time.

Also, you should be feeling changes in your body and seeing improvement in your chart. I expect my patients to see a significant decrease in all PMS symptoms within 2 menstrual cycles. Also, I like to see positive changes in the chart with each sequential cycle.

I just advised a patient of mine on finding an acupuncturist in her new residence. She was moving to Los Angeles started her search for a fertility acupuncturist by Googling "acupuncture" "infertility" "los angeles." She visited the websites of the top ten acupuncturists in her area. She then called 5 of them to get a feel for them on the phone. After a 10 minute conversation with one acupuncturist, she made an appointment and turned out to be happy with her decision.

I do think that your impression on the phone is correct most of the time. An acupuncturist specializing in treating infertility will usually take the time to connect with you on the phone. How much time she takes will be an indication of her attention to you in the clinic. I hope this is helpful for you.

Good luck!
Amelia

After 2 failed IVFs, I promised my husband and Amelia that I'd take that much needed break and give acupuncture and herbs a good, honest try. Refusing to give up hope, but barely holding onto any, I continued with Amelia and sure enough we found out we were pregnant the following month. This time we were pregnant "naturally"!

Needless to say we had the Providence Reproductive Endocrinology department scratching their heads in disbelief, all the while Amelia never wavering in her confidence to help see this happen just as it was meant to, naturally.

If it weren't for the amazingly passionate, intelligent and loving care of Amelia- I could very well be carrying some anonymous donor egg inside of my body and celebrating on a much different level.

My name is Nicole and I started working with Amelia after not getting my period for several months after going off birth control pills. I had been on and off birth control pills for 10 years and was ready to start trying for a baby.

At 28 years old (and my husband was 29) we could not imagine that we would have problems conceiving. After 3 months and lots of tests with my OBGYN, I was encouraged to try acupuncture because there were no "medical" reasons why I wasn't getting my period.

After just one appointment with Amelia I got my period and after just 3 or 4 months, I was pregnant. I am now 32 weeks and due in September. We are so excited to meet our baby boy!

I would strongly encourage any woman to give acupuncture a try if they are having trouble conceiving or even just having trouble getting their body ready for conception. Best of luck to all of you!
