Finding a Fertility Acupuncturist

by Joann
(Setauket, NY)

Hi Amelia,
I need you advice in finding a fertility acupuncturist. Should an acupuncturist check your pulse at the time of each visit?

How do you know if he/she is doing what is needed? I am interested in acupuncture and herbs for unexplained infertility.

Other than word of mouth, how do I find a qualified fertility acupuncturist?

Thanks for allowing me to ask these important questions and God bless you for this web site!

Blessings,
Joann

Finding a Fertility Acupuncturist
by: Amelia Hirota

Hi Joann,
Finding a good fertility acupuncturist can be tricky. There really is no fool proof method. However, I'll give you a few guidelines to help you.

Also, you may want to take my Fertility Acupunture Teleclass called, "If Only the Needles Could Talk" to help you understand how acupuncture enhances fertility, so that you can better choose an appropriate acupuncturist.

Your acupuncturist may or may not check your pulse at every visit. It depends on how important pulse taking is to her diagnostic method. In my case, sometimes I am very interested in the pulse and at other times I don't even take it. For me it's case by case.

I've heard from some of my readers that their acupuncturist never advises them on diet. An acupuncturist that isn't talking about diet isn't really doing a good job. If they are too busy to talk about diet, they are too busy and need to make adjustments. Diet is the foundation of traditional Chinese medicine and treating a patient without paying attention to their diet is a waste of time.

Also, you should be feeling changes in your body and seeing improvement in your chart. I expect my patients to see a significant decrease in all PMS symptoms within 2 menstrual cycles. Also, I like to see positive changes in the chart with each sequential cycle.

I just advised a patient of mine on finding an acupuncturist in her new residence. She was moving to Los Angeles started her search for a fertility acupuncturist by Googling "acupuncture" "infertility" "los angeles." She visited the websites of the top ten acupuncturists in her area. She then called 5 of them to get a feel for them on the phone. After a 10 minute conversation with one acupuncturist, she made an appointment and turned out to be happy with her decision.

I do think that your impression on the phone is correct most of the time. An acupuncturist specializing in treating infertility will usually take the time to connect with you on the phone. How much time she takes will be an indication of her attention to you in the clinic. I hope this is helpful for you.

Good luck!
Amelia

Hi Amelia, I have also been diagnosed with low ovarian reserve with an AMH test. My question is since I can't conceive naturally, whether or not acupuncture will help in my situation? Will it help with a better response to medications thereby producing more eggs with potentially good egg quality to have a healthy child? What do you think of acupuncture and low ovarian reserve? Thank you for your assistance, Shelley

In my opinion acupuncture is better than Boston IVF. I started seeing Amelia Hirota at the Center of Balance after I had gone through 6 IVF cycles with 3 transfers. My last cycle ended with a miscarriage at 6 weeks. Learn why Samantha feels that acupuncture worked better than Boston IVF for her.

Dear Amelia, My name is Heather and I've been seeing an acupuncturist that I really like here in San Diego. I recently completed a comprehensive female hormone panel saliva test and it showed that I have high testosterone levels. I was told that I have too much sugar in my diet with possible PCOS. What do you think about high testosterone levels and PCOS?

Dear Amelia, I have uterine fibroids and I had a myomectomy when I was 27. My goal in to get pregnant and shrink the fibroids without undergoing another surgery. Please let me know what you think my coarse of action should be. Learn the answer to Oneka's question, "can acupuncture shrink uterine fibroids?" and ask your own questions too.
