Acupuncture and Premature Ovarian Insufficiency

Hi Amelia,
I just turned 36. I was diagnosed with premature ovarian insufficiency (also referred to as "failure" but I can't stand that term). I had a regular cycle for the first 32 years of my life and it abruptly stopped. This coincided with an enormous amount of stress.

Once this happened I got a diagnosis a few months later and in came anxiety, depression and more stress trying to face the loss of biological children. I decided against HRT and have made changes in my lifestyle. Months ago, after going gluten free I had a short period of bleeding and my body felt like it used to...all symptoms were gone!

I am looking for an acupuncturist to help support me preparing my body but need someone who has as much hope and believes the possibility that I do; that my body can find balance and welcome back a cycle. Do you think this is possible for women experiencing POI to get their reproductive system to kick back in?

Thanks!
Noelle

Acupuncture and Premature Ovarian Insufficiency
by: Amelia Hirota

Hi Noelle,
I totally agree with you that the term POF (Premature Ovarian Failure) is a terrible, depressing term. Premature Ovarian Insufficiency sounds better and is probably more accurate.

As you yourself found, your menstrual cycles changed dramatically after a period of extreme stress. This doesn't mean that you're out of eggs. Instead, it indicates that your migration of follicles was affected by this stressful time in your life.

When your body is hammered with lots of stress, it has to make a decision between directing resources towards dealing with the stress or devoting resources to reproduction. Because the body believes that the very survival of the body is at stake, it tends to put dealing with the stress over developing a good quality follicle.

It's very interesting and telling that after going gluten free, you had a period and felt like yourself again. I believe that if you followed our program with appropriate diet recommendations, lifestyle changes, acupuncture and personalized supplement protocols that you could regain a regular period again. Also, we have tests that will tell us exactly what your hormones are doing and what is the health of your tissues and glands. The results of these tests is what guides our treatments and supplement protocols.

Over the years, I've had many patients lose their periods for various reasons and/ or be diagnosed with POF (Premature Ovarian Failure) by their doctors. In most cases, they started cycling again after following our program. Many of these women then went on to get pregnant and stay pregnant. You can read some of these success stories on my site.

There is definitely hope for you, If you were able to have a period by making a few changes, I believe that you can regain a regular period by following our targeted program. You may want to check out Webinar #1, "Your Hormones are the Driver Behind Your Fertility" and Webinar #6, "Are You Really Running Out of Eggs?" I think these 2 webinars would help you understand what's probably going on in your body and how you can positively affect the migration of your follicles.

Amelia Hirota, D.Ac.
